EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Sabine Klahr was named vice provost for Global on May 15 after serving as interim vice provost since March 2024 and joining as associate vice provost in July 2022. She now serves the role that directs international programs and global partnerships at Penn State Global. Penn State
- ➤ Sé Morrisson and Fiona Combs, both student marshals and Schreyer Honors Scholars from State College, graduated from Penn State on May 10 with four bachelor's degrees each—a rare achievement for undergraduates in the College of the Liberal Arts—and their majors include African studies, anthropology, classics and ancient Mediterranean studies with a minor in Arabic for Morrisson, and art, English, medieval studies and Spanish with a minor in global and international studies for Combs. This accomplishment distinguishes them as the only Penn State students this spring to complete quadruple majors. Penn State
- ➤ Penn State University Libraries presented its eighth annual awards—honoring 104 students across 20 campuses—for excellence in information literacy this spring. The honors recognize strong research skills as shown by unified judging criteria applied to student posters and presentations. Penn State
- ➤ Kathryn Salzer, an associate professor of history, has been named Rick and Sue Barry Director of the Paterno Fellows Program effective July 1—she will lead the honors program that offers undergraduates research, internship, and study abroad opportunities. She will work alongside interim director Joshua Wretzel to expand focus areas including ethics, sustainability and artificial intelligence. Penn State
- ➤ A pending settlement in federal court may let Penn State buy the former Beta Theta Pi house at 220 N. Burrowes St.—a move tied to a $10 million loan dispute with alumnus Donald Abbey and years of legal fights following a 2017 hazing death. The Board of Trustees will vote on the deal in July. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Centre Area Transportation Authority plans to raise its fixed-route and CATA Go fares by 14% from $2.20 to $2.50 and to expand CATA Go service so every Centre Region community gets full coverage by the end of the year. It will also study on-demand service to the airport and Amtrak stations, launch a new mobile app and fare system in August, adjust route services by discontinuing the Bellefonte B-Line and adding summer trial routes + work to ease driver recruitment challenges. - ➤ Penn State announced that Renata Engel will serve as interim vice president for Commonwealth campuses and executive chancellor of the Commonwealth campuses effective May 19. She will replace Margo DelliCarpini while Karen Pollack fills her former role + Engel brings extensive experience from online education and engineering roles. Daily Collegian

- ➤ Although Penn State’s softball season ended last week, three players — Brooke Klosowicz, Maddie Gordon and Meagan Ricks — earned NFCA Second Team All-Region honors while Haylie Brunson received NFCA Third Team All-Region nods. - ➤ Ivan Juric—a 7 foot 244 pound incoming freshman from Sunrise Christian Academy—committed to play for Penn State and is expected to fill a spot as a stretch four or five next season based on team needs.
