CULTURE NEWS

  • Penn State University Libraries will show Paper Paradise—an exhibit of Pennsylvania German calligraphic art and paper cuts from the 18th century to today—starting May 28 at the Eberly Family Special Collections Library on campus, with an opening reception from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Mann Assembly Room.  Penn State

  • Penn State Provost Sotiropoulos shared his op-ed insights on AI's role in shaping doctoral education and modernizing the land grant mission, noting that while AI can speed up research — it will not replace human judgment, ethics, or curiosity.  Penn State
  • Stuart Rothstein, a partner at Apollo Global Management, spoke to Penn State Smeal graduates on Saturday, May 9 at the Bryce Jordan Center, focusing on gratitude, agency and giving back. He encouraged graduates to thank their supporters and build strong ties for their future.  Penn State
  • Penn State Smeal alumna Uma Moriarity received the Alumni Achievement Award in March for her work as a senior investment strategist and global head of sustainability & leader in ESG practices, crediting her Penn State experience for sparking her drive.  Penn State
  • Penn State Extension agronomy educator Andrew Frankenfield advised farmers to save on rising diesel+fertilizer costs by matching tractor size to tasks and using soil testing for proper nutrient application during planting.   • Penn State faculty voted to unionize, forming the Faculty Alliance affiliated with SEIU Local 668. Once certified by the Labor Relations Board, the union will represent all non-managerial faculty at University Park, Commonwealth Campuses, and University Libraries.  StateCollege.com
  • Christina Luisa Hughes graduated from Penn State on May 9 with a bachelor's degree in criminology and three minors — she will earn her master’s degree in homeland security this fall as she prepares for a career in law enforcement.  Penn State
  • Penn State University Libraries awarded 95 students from 19 campuses for excellence in research and information literacy after the spring semester ended at University Park (the honor recognizes outstanding undergraduate research).  Penn State
  • Penn State faculty voted in favor of unionizing on Thursday in a mail-in election (administered by the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board), with 2,510 votes supporting union representation for thousands across the campuses.  Daily Collegian
  • Sixteen first-generation students completed the Lighthouses program in April at Penn State as faculty connected them with campus resources and networking opportunities. The program will be offered again this fall — aiming to double enrollment.  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • Left-handed center Egor Shilov committed to Penn State men's hockey on Thursday after recording 82 points in 62 games with the QMJHL's Victoriaville Tigres. He joins fellow recruits Charlie Michaud and Marco Mignosa, adding depth to the Nittany Lion roster.  Onward State
  • Three-star running back Chukwuma Odoh has committed to play football for Penn State in the 2027 recruiting class; the Paramus native — ranked No. 22 in New Jersey — selected Penn State over Maryland, Michigan State, and Wisconsin, joining teammate Aiden Gibson.  Onward State
  • Coach Matt Campbell expects Penn State's football team to build chemistry in early nonconference games as quarterback Rocco Becht returns from shoulder surgery; his recovery is key for an 11-1 season (early games will test the lineup) (if players remain healthy).  StateCollege.com
