- ➤ Penn State police charged former Nittany Lion men's basketball player Miles L. Goodman—19—with five counts of invasion of privacy and one count of unlawful dissemination of an intimate image after he secretly recorded a sexual encounter with a woman and showed the video to others; his preliminary hearing is set for June 11. - ➤ A leak on Monday revealed that Penn State might close seven Commonwealth Campuses—DuBois, Fayette, Mont Alto, New Kensington, Shenango, Wilkes-Barre, and York—amid steep enrollment declines. The university criticized the leak and said an executive session will replace the planned public meeting—details on next steps will be shared after the review. StateCollege.com
- ➤ Penn State may change how it closes some Commonwealth Campuses as new legal notices hint that trustees will vote on the decision instead of it being made solely by the President—Trustee Barry Fenchak, whose write-in campaign fell short, contested his board status in Centre County Court and raised questions about the future of faculty, students and properties. - ➤ Math professor Anna Mazzucato, a Distinguished Senior Scholar at Penn State, has been named a Martarano Leadership Fellow and will work with the dean on faculty-affairs projects, including serving on the University Faculty Affairs Advisory Council. - ➤ Al Karosas, the Bryce Jordan Center’s general manager, was named an instructor at the IAVM’s Venue Management School—a program that honors his more than two decades of leadership in venue management. - ➤ The University Libraries’ Conservation Centre will lead free hands-on papermaking sessions at the Arboretum at Penn State Childhood’s Gate Children’s Garden from 10 a.m. to noon on June 12 and July 15 — the sessions will let all ages learn to use recycled and garden fibers to create their own paper. - ➤ Kaitlin Dasovich, a recent Penn State geosciences graduate, presented her senior thesis on a mastodon tusk found by a farmer in an Iowa stream. She used Penn State’s facilities to radiocarbon date the fossil—measuring isotopes to track climate, habitat, diet and a four-year period of the mastodon’s life—which adds clues to understanding its extinction. - ➤ On May 5, Penn State submitted a declaration supporting a lawsuit by higher education groups to block NSF’s proposed funding cut that would have cost the university nearly $20 million in indirect research funds. The declaration noted that in FY24, NSF funds supported $85,845,000 in research and enabled essential equipment purchases—showing the key role federal funding plays in the university’s research mission.
