COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Centre Gives will begin tomorrow at 8 a.m. and run until 8 p.m. on May 15 to support local nonprofits with online donations. Centre Foundation has set a $500,000 stretch pool—up from $300,000 last year—and the event will conclude with a festival in Bellefonte from 5 to 8 p.m. to award extra prizes.  StateCollege.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Representatives from America250PA, the Pennsylvania Freemasons, and local leaders planted a Liberty Tree sapling at Centre Furnace Mansion in State College on May 10 as part of the United States’ 250th birthday celebrations. The sapling was grown from seeds of the last known Liberty Tree + it stands as a symbol of local heritage and freedom.  StateCollege.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Renovations on the HUB-Robeson Center third floor are underway and will finish in fall 2025. The project—developed with student input—adds offices for groups, meeting areas, and a meditation room, with work continuing over the summer.  Penn State
  • Penn State Extension will offer an online webinar on Home Food Preservation: Water Bath Canning on May 21 (from noon to 1:30 p.m.) for ($5) registration. Educators will explain safe canning techniques and USDA guidelines to help participants preserve seasonal foods.  Penn State
  • The Penn State Board of Trustees will meet Thursday with an 8 a.m. executive session followed by a virtual public meeting at 8:30 a.m. to consider President Neeli Bendapudi’s recommendation to close 12 smaller Commonwealth Campuses due to enrollment and financial pressures (the seven largest campuses and special mission ones will continue operating).  StateCollege.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A class of 38 new deputy sheriffs from across the state finished 19 weeks of training at the Penn State-run program—learning law enforcement skills such as crime codes, courtroom procedures, and defensive tactics—and will graduate on May 16 at The Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center.  Penn State
  • At a recent borough council meeting, Centre Area Transportation Authority CEO David Rishel proposed raising fares from $2.20 to $2.50 for all community and express routes and expanding CATAGO! service countywide by year’s end. He also announced the cancellation of the B-Line route on June 30 — fare boxes will be replaced with scanners in August — and the development of a new app to better connect transit services.  Daily Collegian
  • CATA Executive Director David Rishel told the Borough Council that fares for buses and on-demand transit will rise from $2.20 to $2.50 due to inflation since 2020—changes that will take effect soon—and that CATAGO! will expand to all of Centre County by year-end. He also announced that fare boxes will be replaced with scanners in August and that the B-line route will end on June 30 while a new app is being developed to connect riders to the airport and train lines—providing more transit options.  Daily Collegian
