EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Nearly 200 alumni and guests attended a May 2 ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Susan Welch Liberal Arts Building at Penn State University Park, the first liberal arts building opened in nearly 50 years. Inclement weather moved parts of the event indoors at the Nittany Lion Inn Ballroom — attendees later toured modern classrooms, labs, and administrative spaces. Penn State
- ➤ A Penn State fraternity in State College was suspended indefinitely after credible reports of hazing and misconduct led it to withdraw its university recognition and operate off campus — the group will lose its privileges for at least four years. StateCollege.com
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ PennDOT held a public meeting Thursday night to gather input on the new State College Area Connector project that will change an 8-mile stretch of roadway and impact homes, farmland, and local noise levels. Local residents voiced serious concerns while state officials stressed the project will improve safety and noted construction will not start until at least 2030 — new plans will be reviewed based on community feedback. - ➤ The Penn State Board of Trustees election filled three alumni trustee seats with Lynch, Pilewicz, and Moriarity winning terms that begin July 1; Lynch led with 4,942 votes from 17,720 cast. One incumbent now serves in a new role plus the changes bring fresh perspectives to the board. StateCollege.com
- ➤ The Department of Corrections will decide in a few weeks on closing SCI Rockview + Quehanna Boot Camp after public hearings and concern over high repair costs. The agency said Rockview needs $74 million + Quehanna Boot Camp needs $6.8 million in repairs, and part of Rockview’s property will stay in service to provide utilities for nearby facilities. ABC 23

- ➤ ClearWater Conservancy’s Centred Outdoors program began on May 4 at Colerain Forges Mansion Estate and offers free outdoor events including nature walks, outdoor yoga, and mindfulness sessions + it will run through October with guided outings on Sundays and Thursdays and special midweek activities like Fresh Air Walks in State College. - ➤ Former Penn State volleyball alum Zoe Weatherington was drafted by the AI Peppers in the Korean Volleyball Federation foreign player draft—she will head overseas to play professionally. She played three seasons at Utah before transferring to Happy Valley for two seasons. Daily Collegian
- ➤ Penn State men's hockey will start the 2025-26 season with a road game against Arizona State on Oct. 3 — the Nittany Lions will then host Clarkson on Oct. 9 to open their home schedule. This release marks the first two opponents for the team as they prepare for the new season. Daily Collegian
- ➤ Six Nittany Lions earned Big Ten honors this season, with Natalie Lieto selected for the Big Ten All-Defensive Team and Maddie Gordon, Meagan Ricks, Brooke Klosowicz, Haylie Brunson and Jordyn Jochims receiving other awards. —Their recognitions underline strong contributions by the team during a competitive season.
