ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Job seekers in Centre County will meet over 70 employers at the Spring Job Fair on Wednesday, May 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. at C3 Sports in State College—offering full-time, part-time, seasonal and hybrid roles across sectors such as healthcare, education and technology. WTAJ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Penn State Libraries is hosting de-stress fest events across five campus libraries to help students cope with finals by offering free snacks, puzzles, crafts, and other relaxation tools—events run from April 28 to May 8 and feature different activities at each location. Many students can take a break from studying by visiting sites such as the Architecture & Landscape Architecture Library or the Physical & Mathematical Sciences Library for these supports. - ➤ Penn State’s Faculty Senate voted 97—62 to call on university leaders to pause plans to close smaller campuses, warning that closures could hurt local communities and students. University officials said a board meeting in mid-May will review the recommendations after commencement on May 9-11. StateCollege.com
- ➤ Movin’ On is a student-run music festival that will begin at 3:30 p.m. today on the IM Fields near Jeffrey Field to mark the last day of classes. Admission is free for students with a valid ID — the event will feature vendors, inflatables, food trucks and performances by The All-American Rejects, Pusha T, Baby Tate, Claire Rosinkranz and local band Fez. - ➤ Fiona Combs, a Paterno Fellow and Schreyer Scholar at Penn State, is graduating this semester with four bachelor's degrees in English, Spanish, medieval studies and art, plus a minor in global and international studies—she studied abroad in Dublin, Athens, Puebla and Lima—and she will travel to Cambodia for two weeks through the Schreyer Honors College program to explore Southeast Asian art and architecture. - ➤ The Centre Area Transportation Authority announced it is offering free summer bus passes for youths 18 and under—valid from May 1 to August 31. Young riders must show a school ID, photo ID or birth certificate at the customer service center at 108 East Beaver Avenue in State College. WTAJ
- ➤ Transportation Services announced summer changes; core faculty and staff permits will allow parking at Lot 11, Lot 22, Yellow H, and the Nittany and West decks from May 12 through Aug 17. CATA will run a reduced light schedule from May 5 through May 11 and again from May 12 through Aug 17 with trial routes such as the UP — University Parkway route and the HV — Happy Valley route to serve key stops. - ➤ Local officials in Centre and Clearfield counties have set up power charging and water stations to help residents during power outages as utility crews work to restore service. The stations — such as those at Patton Township in State College and Goshen Township — operate during set hours with plans to add more sites as needed. WTAJ
