ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday night, a 22-year-old State College man was fatally electrocuted near a utility pole on the 1500 block of University Drive at about 7:15 p.m. while putting out a mulch fire amid a severe storm that damaged power lines — police said he was pronounced dead and that his death is the second electrocution fatality in the area in recent weeks.  StateCollege.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Downtown State College Improvement District and State College Redevelopment Authority are planning a Retail Launch Program to help first-time retail and small business owners overcome high startup costs and complex permitting requirements — they will offer matching funds up to $15,000 for key expenses such as design, planning and legal support. The program will launch in summer and support five to seven new businesses as they work with service providers to build a solid foundation downtown.  StateCollege.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Changes in federal policy on international student visas have raised questions on whether some Penn State students will return to campus as Centre County District Attorney Bernie Cantorna noted 25 instances where visas were revoked for minor infractions—none led to criminal convictions and many students left voluntarily. School officials say the university is supporting impacted students through its global office while federal court decisions restored SEVIS records for hundreds of international students, affecting more than 11,500 international community members at Penn State.  ABC 23
  • Penn State will host the 20th North American Mine Ventilation Symposium on June 21–26 in Pittsburgh in collaboration with SME and its Underground Ventilation Committee. The weeklong event will gather mining experts to discuss safe ventilation methods, new technologies, and evolving regulations.  Penn State
  • AAUW State College will host its 63rd annual Used Book Sale from May 17-20 at Penn State Snider Agricultural Arena, offering over 150,000 books, games, puzzles, CDs and DVDs for purchase. Organizers will run the sale with set hours and limit indoor attendance to 400 shoppers for safety—featuring Half-Price Day on May 19 and Bag Day on May 20.  Penn State
  • The Penn State Eberly College of Science held its Ashtekar Frontiers of Science lecture series from Jan 25 through Mar 22 to mark the United Nations designating 2025 as Year of Quantum. The six lectures are now available online and show how quantum research can influence areas such as materials, health, and computing.  Penn State

  • Centre County residents can recycle up to 12 clean, undamaged tires at a free event on May 3 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Centre County Recycling and Refuse Authority headquarters in Bellefonte—registration is required and only tires under 43 inches from cars, light trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, or bikes are accepted.  WTAJ

  • Middle blocker Gabrielle Nichols — a top recruit from Penn State’s 2025 class — was named to the 19-player USA roster for the 2025 FIVB U19 World Championship and will train in Colorado Springs soon. She recorded one kill and one block in her first spring game against Pitt.  Daily Collegian
  • On Tuesday, Paige Moriarta pitched a complete game for State College, striking out 17 and going 4 for 5 with 3 RBIs while allowing 6 hits in an 11-3 win over Cedar Cliff. She hit a two-run homer in the fifth that extended the Little Lions' lead — a key moment in the game.  PennLive
  • After losing two linebackers in the spring transfer portal, Penn State football will search for new transfer players to fill its linebacker room. Head coach James Franklin said the team has already heard from Mohamed Toure and Amare Campbell and may consider additional prospects from Rutgers, North Carolina, Boise State and BYU—aiming to boost depth before the season.  Onward State
