COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ferguson Township held an Arbor Day Celebration at Haymarket Park as township supervisors officially began the event, residents planted two trees, and informational tables taught families about the benefits of trees (cooling, wildlife habitat, carbon sequestration, and reduced stormwater runoff).  WTAJ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Country singer Riley Green will perform with special guests Jamey Johnson, Drake White and Hannah McFarland at the Bryce Jordan Center on November 13 at 6:45 p.m.—presales start at 10 a.m. today and tickets go on sale Friday, May 2.  Onward State

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Timmy Garde, a Penn State Smeal alumnus, has supported the college for over 40 years with volunteer work and generous gifts. He pledged $100,000 last fall to create a marketing fund and endowed scholarships that have helped dozens of students pay for their education — his ongoing work includes guest lectures and a branding panel that offers career insights to students.  Penn State
  • Penn State Libraries will host De-stress Fest during finals week to help students manage stress with free snacks—games, crafts, and more at several campus and branch locations. At Pattee Library, the Leisure Reading Room will offer free coffee, snacks and crafts from 3 to 8 p.m. from May 4th through May 6th.  Penn State
  • Penn State College of Health and Human Development named student marshals for spring commencement, choosing nine students from each department (such as Natalie Meriwether from Biobehavioral Health) to represent the college. The selected students will pursue further studies or careers after graduation (each recognized for strong academic and leadership achievements).  Penn State

HEALTH NEWS

  • Penn State Extension will offer a free six-part Mental Wellness Series webinar during May that covers topics (helping others in distress, emotional overload, addiction, youth mental health, grief and loss, and building resilience) and runs from 11 a.m. to noon. Registration is required by the day before each session, and recorded webinars will be available to participants.  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State softball beat Maryland 14-12 in a high scoring game that ended a five-game losing streak—The Nittany Lions will face Maryland tomorrow at noon to boost their chance at the Big Ten Tournament.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State men's volleyball earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by winning the EIVA Tournament after beating Princeton, Harvard and NJIT and turning a 0–7 start into a 14–15 record. The Nittany Lions will travel to face Daemen in the Opening Round on May 2 — the winner will receive the No. 7 seed and play No. 2 seed Hawaii in the quarterfinals.  Daily Collegian
