COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The State College Food Bank will hold an anniversary celebration Thursday at its new 18,000 square-foot facility that opened last April and will unveil a donor wall honoring capital campaign donors. The food bank serves about 520 families monthly and faces rising food prices from USDA funding cuts—its director noted a hope for more donations of ready-to-eat soup.  ABC 23

CRIME NEWS

  • Penn State wrestler Braeden Davis (20) was charged this week with resisting arrest, trespassing, and alcohol violations after refusing to leave a fraternity house on Prospect Avenue and trying to run when questioned; he will face a preliminary hearing next month and Penn State Athletics said his alleged actions do not reflect the program’s values.  ABC 23
  • An 88-year-old man was scammed out of $20,000 when a caller claimed his son needed bail and directed him to a pharmacy in State College on April 24—Pennsylvania State Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.  WTAJ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Penn State grad students from the Huck Institutes earned two-year AHA Postdoctoral Fellowships to help with research in integrative biomedical physiology and neuroscience. Their awards give them a stipend, health insurance, and project support — a rare win on their first try.  Penn State
  • This spring, Penn State students in ENGR 422 worked with SUPSI students from Switzerland to create projects that build cross-cultural leadership and communication skills+ They met during a visit to Penn State and will travel to Switzerland in May to present their final projects and strengthen their international ties.  Penn State
  • Penn State Eberly College of Science honored chemistry professor Ben Lear and mathematics professor Russell deForest with the 2025 C.I. Noll Award for Excellence in Teaching today for their outstanding contributions to undergraduate education—this award is the highest teaching honor in the college.  Penn State
  • UPUA Speaker Kat Hogan and Vice Speaker Maguire Younes said Friday afternoon that former President Rasha Elwkail was removed from the assembly for repeated issues with professionalism, communication, and team work (she waived her right to a week’s notice). Former vice president Fletcher Port now leads the assembly, and the decision faces criticism from Penn State’s NAACP chapter.  Daily Collegian

  • Penn State safety Kevin Winston Jr.—who tore his ACL last year and ran a fast 40-yard dash on March 28—was selected by the Tennessee Titans with the No. 82 overall pick in the NFL Draft's third round on Friday. He said he plans to be healthy by training camp and may prove to be a steal in the draft.  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State track and field athletes competed at the historic Penn Relays in Philadelphia as championship season approaches. Gabrielle Deglau set a personal best in the women's hammer throw and Jake Allen won the men's 1500-meter championship — the team looks to conclude with the men's triple jump later today.  Daily Collegian
