CULTURE NEWS

  • Penn State is hosting many cultural events from April 24 to May 15 that include free performances like Ivyside Pride at Altoona campus and art workshops at University Park. The schedule features lectures, music concerts and commencement ceremonies on May 9-11 — offering a range of creative and academic activities for students and community members.  Penn State

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ramsés Martínez Barquero, a fourth-year doctoral student in Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese, received the 2025 Eleanor Roosevelt Memorial Fellowship at the McCourtney Institute for Democracy; his dissertation examines how authors in Spain and Portugal responded to dictatorships in the mid-20th century. He came to Penn State in 2021 (after earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Spain) and plans to work with scholars (including potential archival research in Portugal) as his project continues.  Penn State
  • Fourth graders in the State College Area School District are learning earth science with Penn State experts—attending hands-on classroom lessons and museum visits that explore fossils, erosion, and plate tectonics as part of a second-year program. The program helps students see real examples of scientific concepts and how the Earth has changed over time.  Penn State
  • The Penn State Learning Factory is hosting its biannual engineering project showcase on Tuesday, April 29 at the Bryce Jordan Center from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., where cornerstone and capstone design projects by first-year and senior students will be displayed. A virtual showcase will run from April 30 through May 9 — both events are free and open to the public.  Penn State
  • On Wednesday evening, about 50 parents and students met with the school board to raise concerns after a man accused of planning a mass shooting at State High was arrested and metal detectors were removed. They argued that the changes have heightened anxiety and pressed for visible security measures and better mental health support—while police maintained that there is no credible threat.  StateCollege.com

  • The University Park Undergraduate Association voted to remove President Rasha Elwakil from the Assembly after a debate that lasted from 7 p.m. until 12:44 a.m. following motions by E Saba+Josh Meert, with the vote meeting the three-fourths requirement a week after her swearing in.  Daily Collegian

SPORTS NEWS

  • Five Penn State wrestlers—Luke Lilledahl, Marcus Blaze, Beau Bartlett, Mitchell Mesenbrink, and Rocco Welsh—are competing at the U.S. Open Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, which began on April 23 as they aim to secure a seed for Final X that will decide Team USA’s lineup for the World Championships and next summer Olympics.  Onward State
  • Penn State baseball upset No. 17 West Virginia three to two on Dollar Dog Night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park as a record crowd of 6,106 cheered while over 12,000 hot dogs were served and Mason Butash pitched 4.2 shutout innings (Jack Porter’s solo home run sparked the rally).  Daily Collegian
