EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two State College Area School District students, Kali Nicolas and Maya Toyokawa, have been named winners in the PennDOT Regional Innovations Challenge for their Belt Buddy mobile app that listens for seat belt chimes to promote safety — they will advance to the statewide finals to present their proposal for a $6,000 award.  StateCollege.com
  • David Morgan, a Penn State alumnus and longtime healthcare worker from Hershey, is running for the Board of Trustees and wants to boost student support with better health services and more on-campus jobs — he brings years of experience from his dental practice and small business management. He aims to serve as a unifier by helping keep faculty supported and research strong.  Onward State
  • Karen Keller— a Penn State alumna, lawyer, and parent— is running for a Board of Trustees seat to bring her legal and business experience to help improve cross-college communication and student mental health on campus. She aims to strengthen collaboration and better support students based on her work with the Alumni Association.  Onward State

SPORTS NEWS

  • Last week, Penn State added transfer Josh Reed to its men's basketball team after waiting over three weeks. The team missed out on targets like transfer guard Izaiah Pasha and Maryland transfer Braden Pierce— and it continues reaching out to fill open roster spots.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State men's volleyball secured the third seed in the upcoming EIVA Tournament after NJIT beat Harvard. Coach Mark Pavlik said the team will face the sixth seed Harvard in the quarterfinals on Wednesday — all matches will be hosted by Princeton.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State baseball lost to Purdue 11-8 on Easter Sunday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park—poor bullpen performance cost the Nittany Lions in a back-and-forth game. The team will host West Virginia on Tuesday at 6 p.m. for their final Dollar Dog Night home game.  Onward State
  • Penn State captain Tessa Janecke scored the overtime goal that gave the USA the gold medal at the IIHF Women's World Championships yesterday in the Czech Republic — she earned player of the game with six points in six tournament games.  Daily Collegian
