COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On April 17, Penn State students joined the SUAP Sleep Out Speak Out event at the Dr. Keiko Miwa Ross Student Farm to raise awareness about homelessness by trading comfort for a night outdoors. The group held discussions and slept for 12 hours to understand the challenges of not having stable housing.  Daily Collegian
  • On April 25 from 4 to 7 p.m., Penn State's Dr. Keiko Miwa Ross Student Farm will host an Earth Day event with farm tours, food trucks, live music and crafts for all ages. Free buses will shuttle guests from the Penn State Berkey Creamery at 3:45 p.m. until 7:15 p.m. — guests may pre-register for workshops on mushroom log cultivation and vermicomposting.  Penn State

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Steve Wagman is running again for a seat on the Penn State Board of Trustees with a focus on affordable education, student health and safety, and responsible campus upgrades—he has more than 40 years of experience in healthcare and education and has served in multiple roles at Penn State.  Onward State
  • Three Penn State College of Liberal Arts professors—Suzanna Linn, Jeffery Ulmer, and Adrian Wanner—were named distinguished professors as part of a group of 10 honored faculty for outstanding contributions in teaching, research, or service. Linn studies time-series analysis of politics, Ulmer researches criminal justice and sentencing, and Wanner focuses on literary translation and Slavic studies.  Penn State
  • Centre County middle schoolers competed in the National Civics Bee at the Eric J. Barron Innovation Hub on April 15, where they answered civic questions and proposed community solutions. Eighth grader Cooper Palma from Mount Nittany Middle School won first prize with a plan to reduce light pollution—top three finalists will advance to the statewide competition on June 16.  StateCollege.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Centre Region celebrates Earth Day today with events in State College Borough and at Penn State’s Arboretum. In State College, Sidney Friedman Park and the Municipal Building will host live music starting at 11 a.m. along with food trucks and workshops, while the Arboretum offers environmental programs until 2 p.m.  StateCollege.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State men's hockey forward Ben Schoen, a native of Maumee, Ohio, announced on Friday he will return to Hockey Valley for his fifth and final season with the team. He recorded a career-high 20 points last season after missing a year with a lower-body injury — and he said he loves the school and team.  Daily Collegian
  • State College was named as an official team base camp option for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, as teams will train at Jeffrey Field and stay at the Penn Stater Hotel once renovations finish in early 2026.  Onward State
  • On Wednesday night, No. 7 Penn State won 12-4 against No. 19 Rutgers at Panzer Stadium, building a six-goal lead early and holding a strong defense with goalie Jack Fracyon making double-digit saves; the team will play in the Big Ten Tournament on Saturday, April 26 at Panzer Stadium.  Onward State
