EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Penn State graphic design students from the Stuckeman School were honored in the 2025 AIGA Baltimore Flux Student Design Competition; Shalini Prasath won in Packaging for her album design *Liberty: Feminine Rage*, and Jon Petersen was recognized for tequila branding. The contest received over 630 entries.  Penn State
  • Penn State’s Office of Technology Transfer is accepting applications for the Next-Gen Innovators Fellowship (a paid nonacademic opportunity) to train future leaders in technology commercialization through rotations with a venture capital firm, startup and OTT. Applicants will be reviewed until spaces are filled and selected fellows begin in June.  Penn State
  • Penn State will host its annual 'Swipe Out Hunger' campaign April 19-25, encouraging students to donate dining dollars (supporting the Student Emergency Fund) to help peers facing food insecurity.  Penn State
  • Brian Thiede, a rural sociology professor, has been named director of Penn State’s Population Research Institute with a five-year term starting July 1. He plans to boost externally funded research and support early- and mid-career research associates.  Penn State
  • Penn State’s ICDS will host the AI-Powered Materials Seminar Series on Tuesday, April 28 in Pollock Dining Commons, Room 204 (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.), featuring faculty discussing AI and machine-learning applications in materials research. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Penn State meteorology experts captured tree-top corona discharges during thunderstorms in Florida and North Carolina using a new weather telescope (the Corona Observing Telescope System). The study marks the first documentation of this electrical phenomenon that cleans the air.  Penn State

HEALTH NEWS

  • Keira Woods, a pediatric cancer survivor, froze her eggs at Penn State Health before her chemotherapy to keep her future parenthood options open. The program, supported by Four Diamonds, offers egg + sperm preservation and plans to add ovarian tissue freezing to help patients secure their reproductive choices.  Penn State
  • Penn State College of Medicine’s Beat Childhood Cancer Research Consortium will begin a Phase II trial this month to test DFMO for children and young adults with osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma — the study will enroll about 369 patients from over 50 hospitals to evaluate the drug’s safety and its ability to prevent relapse.  Penn State

  • The Cocoziello Institute will host its first annual Built Environment Showcase on April 27 (1:00 PM to 6:00 PM) at a local venue in State College. The event features student research posters, industry networking, and innovative project displays, with registration required.  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Penn State women's basketball star Ashley Owusu signed a training camp contract with the New York Liberty on Wednesday, reopening her WNBA career after she was waived following the 2024 WNBA Draft. She played overseas after a standout season at Penn State.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State football defensive end Mason Robinson suffered a season-ending injury near the start of spring practice, per Lions247's Mark Brennan & will be sidelined for another full season after battling injuries the past two seasons.  Onward State
  • Penn State men’s volleyball faces George Mason at Rec Hall Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m.—a win will clinch the regular season title and the right to host the tournament. Both teams aim to finish the season strong in conference play.  Daily Collegian
  • Former Lady Lion Shay Ciezki signed with Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday, April 14 after posting record stats at Penn State and Indiana (Buffalo native). She is set to begin her professional journey under a rookie scale contract.  Daily Collegian
  • Nick Singleton, a Penn State running back and receiver, heads to the NFL Draft next week in Pittsburgh. His 2025 season had low rushing yards and a foot injury at Senior Bowl practice (delaying his Combine), and analysts say his size and speed suggest he is a promising developmental pick.  Onward State
