CRIME NEWS

  • Police chief John Gardner said that after law enforcement stopped an alleged mass shooting plot at State College Area High School planned for April 21—20-year-old Braeden Phillips was charged with conspiracy to commit murder and unlawful possession of a firearm—and officers continue to follow up on additional tips while safety measures remain in place for students.  StateCollege.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brontë Hamilton, a Penn State Smeal alumna and vice president at TE Connectivity, was named to the Finance Advisory Board—she will join the board’s June 3 meeting in New York City to advise on financial strategy.  Penn State
  • Gary Abdullah, assistant dean for diversity & inclusion in the Bellisario College of Communications, will receive the 2025 Lion’s Paw Medal on April 26 at the annual Convocation Ceremony during Blue-White Weekend. He will be honored for more than 20 years of work supporting students at Penn State.  Penn State
  • Four Penn State undergraduates — Luc Schrauf, Elisabeth Groff, Zach Badinger and Megan von Abo — were named Goldwater Scholars for 2025-26 because of their strong academic records and research work. The award honors students who show promise as future leaders in natural sciences, math and engineering.  Penn State
  • The Materials Research Institute at Penn State announced the 2025 seed grants and Transdisciplinary Teaming Initiative awards to fund interdisciplinary research in materials sustainability, health care, and energy. The eight seed grant projects will receive up to $50,000 each while the teaming award offers up to $20,000—helping teams launch innovative studies.  Penn State
  • The Penn State Symphonic Band and Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform their final concert of the semester on Thursday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Eisenhower Auditorium, featuring modern and classical works with marimba soloist Eunice Sun and guest composer Michael Schelle attending—adding depth to the program.  Penn State

  • Over the weekend, Penn State men’s volleyball swept George Mason in two matches decided in 10 sets—each set saw close scores—and the win improved their record after a loss to Charleston at the end of March.   • Penn State men’s basketball announced its first transfer portal signing as junior guard Josh Reed from Cincinnati joins the team — he averaged 4.8 points and 2.5 rebounds last season and played high school basketball at Pace Academy.  Daily Collegian
