CULTURE NEWS

  • Palmer Museum of Art awarded the inaugural O’Connor Graduate Fellowship to doctoral candidates Holli Turner and Amy Orner, funding a semester of dissertation research. Turner traveled to Spain for archival work while Orner will gather documents in Edinburgh during the 2026-27 academic year.  Penn State

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State will host its 10th Annual Lecture on Compassion on April 16 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Bennett Pierce Living Center in University Park — Barbara Fredrickson will present 'Everyday Compassionate Connections' after founders Mark Greenberg and Christa Turksma donated $70,000 to support the series.  Penn State
  • Plant scientists at Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences received a $1.96M NIH grant for a five-year study on how plants and bacteria share nutrients. Their research will examine which genes help bacteria survive in soil and assist plants with natural fertilizer benefits.  Penn State
  • Two Penn State graduate students recapped their six week internship at QIAGEN in Hilden, Germany last summer where they gained hands on training with digital polymerase chain reaction techniques. Applications for the 2027 internship will open near the end of 2026 on the OHMC website.  Penn State
  • Penn State Extension is hosting a six-part webinar series on weight management and calorie density (The Volumetrics Weigh of Life) from noon to 1 p.m. on consecutive Wednesdays from May 6 to June 10; registration is required by May 5.  Penn State
  • College of Education professor Gerald LeTendre co-edited a new book that shows school leaders how to use intercultural competence to handle conflicts and refocus on student outcomes; the Batschelet Conference initiative now offers an open-access resource hub (with practical tools for educators).  Penn State

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Research from Penn State shows that forest ginseng growers buy extra seed from Midwest artificial shade farms in Wisconsin and Ontario for their plots — a practice that may alter wild ginseng genetics. The study details planting stock sources and calls for native seed alternatives for conservation.  Penn State

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Pennsylvania will allocate $100,000 from the Farm Bill to staff the AgriStress Helpline, as calls have dropped 300% since 2024 — the state will also work with AgriSafe to boost mental health outreach for farmers.  StateCollege.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Owen Rose from Penn State's men's volleyball was named EIVA Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded 11 blocks in Friday's win and seven in Saturday's match at Sacred Heart. It is his third time earning the honor this season, and he now leads the EIVA with 129 blocks.  Onward State
  • Linebacker Tony Rojas tore his ACL in practice just four games into a promising season at Penn State — Coach Tyson Veidt said he is performing individual drills and bonding with new teammates before returning gradually for fall camp.  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State men's lacrosse defenseman Alex Ross was drafted 8th overall by the New York Atlas in the first round of the PLL Draft on Tuesday, Apr. 14. The senior — a consistent starter since his freshman year — posted 106 ground balls and 72 turnovers while helping his team reach Final Four runs.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State men's basketball announced transfer Brant Byers, a 6'8 forward from Miami (OH) who earned All-MAC honors, has committed to join the team. The Chambersburg native has two years of eligibility remaining and is expected to boost scoring and rebounding this season.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State men’s volleyball remained No. 15 in the latest AVCA Poll released Monday — they earned 155 votes after a win over Sacred Heart and will clinch the EIVA regular-season title by winning one match against George Mason at Rec Hall on Friday, Apr. 17 or Saturday, Apr. 18.  Onward State
  • Penn State men's hockey secured its first significant transfer when 6-foot-2 freshman defenseman Caeden Herrington committed from Vermont. Drafted by the Los Angeles Kings, Herrington posted strong numbers with the Catamounts and Lincoln Stars and is expected to boost the blue line.  Daily Collegian
