CRIME NEWS

  • State College police arrested Braeden Phillips, 20, after a concerned resident reported that he planned to attack State College Area High School on April 21 using guns and explosives, and security at the high school has been increased—Phillips faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder and unlawful firearm possession.  StateCollege.com
  • A State College man was arrested on Friday morning after he allegedly attacked two nurses at Mount Nittany Medical Center by pulling one nurse into his room and injuring both during a struggle—he now faces charges including attempted rape and assault and remains in custody.  StateCollege.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Center for the Performing Arts will hold a throwback concert called '50 Forward: Beethoven’s Ninth Revisited' at Eisenhower Auditorium at 8 p.m. Friday, April 25—featuring music by Penn State School of Music choirs and the Philharmonic Orchestra as part of the auditorium's 50th anniversary season.   • Michele Dunleavy, a dance professor and the 2024-25 Penn State Laureate, is set to serve as the School of Theatre’s first artist-in-residence and will lead a series of free dance workshops and public performances at the Penn State Downtown Theatre Center in State College from April 14 through May 3. The workshops run at 5:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. on scheduled dates and the public shows occur at 7:30 p.m. on April 30, May 2 and May 3—inviting community members to explore creative movement in a project called The Beads Project.  Penn State

  • Penn State University Libraries offers research help in person and online—students can use Ask a Librarian for quick answers by chat, text, email or phone and benefit from the Search Bar for peer tutoring that eases finding trusted resources. The services provide a simple way for students to get started on assignments without having to visit the library.  Penn State
  • Six students were selected as marshals for the Bellisario College commencement exercises on May 10 at the Bryce Jordan Center—Michael DeAngelis is named overall while five students represent each major as the exercises begin at 1 p.m.  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Calgary Flames signed former Penn State men's hockey goaltender Arsenii Sergeev to a two-year, two-way contract worth an average annual value of $866,250 that will begin in the 2025-26 season. Sergeev helped lead the Nittany Lions to their first Frozen Four appearance by posting a .919 save rate over 33 games.  Onward State
