CULTURE NEWS

  • A wide variety of museums and galleries will open for Night at the Museums on April 23 from 4 to 8 p.m. at University Park, where visitors can explore exhibits featuring a newly updated display of Old Coaly (a mule from 1857 who helped build Old Main).  Penn State
  • Penn State students showcased 11 films at the Blue and White Film Festival on April 13 at the State Theatre downtown. The event, organized by the Student Film Organization, offered free student admission and $5 non-student tickets.  Penn State
  • The cast of Detroit '67 traveled in March to Detroit for research on the play, visiting Detroit Historical Society sites including the Motown Museum & 12th Street neighborhood to inform their roles. The musical runs April 16-18 at Penn State Downtown Theatre.  Penn State

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State researchers demonstrated a new gallium sandwich structure maintained superconductivity in magnetic fields well above the usual limit when three atomic layers of gallium were placed between graphene and silicon carbide, as reported Apr. 13 (Nature Materials). This breakthrough may advance the design of ultrafast electronics on campus.  Penn State
  • Mark Lima, a Penn State alumnus and CBS News vice president, will deliver the commencement address for the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications on May 9 at 1:30 p.m. in the Bryce Jordan Center.  Penn State
  • Penn State’s Communication, Science and Society Initiative announced four interdisciplinary projects sharing $52,000 in grants to tackle issues from mosquito borne diseases to youth digital media health. The teams will present their work at a campus mini conference on Sept. 11 (showcasing research collaborations).  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State softball is hosting Dollar Dog night today at Beard Field during the game against Bucknell — fans can buy a dollar dog as the Nittany Lions aim to bounce back after a loss to Northwestern.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State men's basketball added its first transfer commitment, Jay Rodgers, who fills the point guard need (the 24-year-old brings veteran experience from New Orleans and Cochise College). The team also hosted IUP guard Dallis Dillard as it considers two additional transfer prospects for next season.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State men's hockey defenseman Cade Christenson entered the transfer portal on Monday as he finished two seasons with the team. He recorded solid numbers (7 goals, 9 assists, 98 blocks in 60 games) and his decision joins other players seeking new opportunities.  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State's Levi Haines earned a berth to Final X 2026 after finishing runner-up at the 2025 Senior World Championships. He will await a 79 kg opponent at the U.S. Open on April 24-25 and compete on June 19 at Prudential Center in Newark as he trains in State College.  Onward State
  • Penn State women’s lacrosse remains at No. 21 after a 19-goal win over Oregon last Thursday and a close loss to No.4 Northwestern Sunday, and they will face No.9 Johns Hopkins at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 16 (at Panzer Stadium).  Onward State
  • Four-star tight end Cooper Terwilliger committed to join Penn State football, (No. 1 in state and No. 12 nationally) for the 2027 class. He chose Penn State over offers from Alabama, Auburn and Florida.  Onward State
