  • State College was named America's Best College Town by USA Today's 10Best after readers voted on small towns under 50,000 people. Mayor Ezra Nanes and local officials say the honor shows the town’s strong community spirit (a nod to its close ties with Penn State and businesses).  StateCollege.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alpha Phi Alpha held the Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant (its first since 2015) on Friday, April 10 at Alumni Hall at Penn State, crowning Milan Dukes as Miss Black and Gold. The event marked its return by featuring performances that celebrated community and achievement.  Daily Collegian

SPORTS NEWS

  • Three-star linebacker Blake Betton has committed to Penn State football. The Shakopee, Minnesota native chose the college over Auburn, Michigan State and Boston College and will visit campus on June 19.  Onward State
  • Penn State men's lacrosse lost 9-8 to Michigan after the Wolverines scored three final-minute goals to secure the win. The Nittany Lions will play Rutgers on Friday, April 17 at SHI Stadium.  Onward State
  • Penn State men's volleyball escaped with a five-set win against Sacred Heart in Connecticut on Friday night—avoiding a second upset in a row. The team will return to Rec Hall for its final regular season series, starting at 6 p.m. Friday.  Daily Collegian
  • Nolan Rucci (6-foot-8, 314 pounds) impressed NFL scouts on Penn State's Pro Day after transferring from Wisconsin and filling in for injured Anthony Donkoh, and teams like the Colts and Bengals reached out as he is projected to sign as an undrafted free agent.  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State Softball lost 13-4 to Northwestern Saturday at Nittany Lion Softball Park (Beard Field) after the game ended early by the mercy rule in five innings; the team will try to avoid a series sweep in today's finale at 11 a.m.  Onward State
  • Penn State baseball lost 3-2 to Ohio State on Saturday in Columbus after a late rally fell short. The Nittany Lions will play the rubber game (today at 1 p.m.) on BTN to try to secure their first Big Ten series win.  Onward State
  • Penn State men's lacrosse lost its Senior Day game to Michigan yesterday at Panzer Stadium (score 9-8) after a late comeback attempt that fell short. The team will travel to Piscataway on Friday at 8 p.m. for its regular-season finale against Rutgers.  Daily Collegian
