CRIME NEWS

  • Joe Ford, part-owner of Campus Steaks in downtown State College, was sentenced to 15 to 30 years in prison yesterday for a home generator fraud scheme—he pled guilty to 74 felony counts and one misdemeanor after taking $474,185 from 64 homeowners.  Onward State

CULTURE NEWS

  • Berkey Creamery released a new temporary flavor called 'Mooovin’ On 50th Anniversary Cookies and Cream'—available from April 4 to May 4 in honor of the student-run Movin’ On 50th festival. The festival will take place on May 2 at Penn State’s IM fields where fans can enjoy the new flavor all weekend.  Onward State
  • The Penn State Alumni Association and World Campus Alumni Society are set to host the inaugural Roar Where You Are celebration on April 22 to honor the Nittany Lion’s birthday—registration is required by April 15 and local gatherings include an event at Axemann Brewery in Centre County alongside a virtual option.  Penn State

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State University Libraries is hosting its hybrid 2025 Minter Lectureship in Conservation on April 24 featuring guest lecturer Randy Silverman at 4 p.m. ET in Foster Auditorium at Paterno Library—attendees must register online for virtual or in-person participation.  Penn State
  • Over 400 students from 20 schools attended a civil engineering event hosted by Penn State’s ASCE chapter from March 27 to 29. They raced concrete canoes, built steel bridges and joined other contests at the new 290,000-square-foot Engineering Collaborative Research and Education building—Penn State teams won awards including the ASCE Distinguished Chapter Award for Region 2.  Penn State
  • Forty-two Penn State graduate students have been recognized with annual awards for their impact in research, scholarship, teaching and outreach—recipients will be celebrated at a special lunch on April 21.  Penn State

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PennDOT said work on the Elmwood Street bridge in College Township will begin Monday and continue until September while drivers on US 322 face short-term lane and shoulder closures. The bridge will stay open until the end of the school year but will be fully closed during summer—contractors will complete repairs to improve its ride quality and extend its life.  StateCollege.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • On April 2, CPVETS held a ribbon-cutting at its new, larger emergency veterinary facility at 100 Oakwood Avenue in Patton Township, and the hospital will begin treating pets on April 10. A public open house is held today from 10 a.m. to noon—an opportunity for pet owners to learn more about its expanded services.  StateCollege.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State men’s volleyball beat Sacred Heart 3-0 Friday night at Rec Hall South Gym to keep in the running for hosting the EIVA tournament after a loss ended their home win streak. The team will face Sacred Heart again today at 3 p.m. at the same gym — they aim to complete the sweep.  Onward State
  • After losing two Big Ten games and falling to No. 10, Penn State men's lacrosse will play No. 13 Michigan at noon Sunday to try to break the losing streak—Coach Jeff Tambroni said the team, which struggled with injuries and low offense in recent matches, hopes to improve its balance and win at key faceoffs.  Daily Collegian
