EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Penn State, teachers are examining how AI changes student work. One teacher added hidden text in a Canvas assignment to show when students copy answers, and while some say AI is a handy tool for tasks like chip design—others worry it might let students cheat and miss real learning.  Onward State
  • Penn State’s 'Stories from the Field' series returns this spring with a new session on housing inequality led by assistant professor Daniela Aiello. The talk will take place on April 16 from noon to 1 p.m. at University Park — 214 Ferguson Building and online via Zoom.  Penn State
  • Muhammad Nazaruddin bin Mohd Salleh, a senior studying economics, has received the 2025 Ardeth and Norman Frisbey International Student Award for his work in helping international students and promoting cultural understanding + strengthening community ties at Penn State.  Penn State
  • Uma Moriarity, a Penn State alumna from the Class of 2014, is campaigning for a seat on the Board of Trustees under the Penn State Forward platform to boost sustainability and financial transparency at the university—she draws on her experience as the global head of sustainability at a major real estate investment firm. She plans to use her expertise to implement long-term investment strategies that can help future-proof the university for generations to come—her campaign seeks to address the need for lasting planning amid shifting enrollment trends.  Onward State

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An investigation found that foster care agencies in Pennsylvania took Social Security benefits meant for children—totaling at least $15.7 million from 1,300 youths over four years—without notifying either the kids or their advocates, and officials said the funds help cover care costs. Lawmakers and child advocates say reforms are needed to ensure children can access the money when they age out.  StateCollege.com
  • On Tuesday, Penn State trustee Barry Fenchak filed a lawsuit against the governing board and former chair to win a spot on this spring’s alumni election ballot—he said the board’s new bylaws and nomination process broke Pennsylvania law. His lawyers said the changes hurt his free speech and board duties, and election ballots will be mailed on April 21 with voting ending at 9 a.m. on May 8 while a hearing is planned for May 12.  StateCollege.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new $2.5 million emergency vet clinic will open on April 10 in State College to offer 24/7 care amid rising pet emergencies. Owner Dr. Andrea Loar said the clinic will partner with Penn State (to give students hands-on training) at its new location (100 Oakwood Ave., Suite 700).  WTAJ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Carter Starocci ended his collegiate wrestling career with his fifth national title when he defeated Parker Keckeisen 4-3 on March 22 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The Penn State wrestler started his career at Cathedral Prep in Erie and worked hard to lead his team—marking a historic moment in local wrestling.  Daily Collegian
  • After Penn State Men’s Ice Hockey earned a spot in the Frozen Four, local stores like Family Clothesline and Student Bookstore saw a rise in customers buying blue and white gear ahead of the team’s semi-final game against Boston University on April 10th in St. Louis. This is the first time the team has reached the Frozen Four—sparking strong local support.  ABC 23
  • Jess Mruzik, an outside hitter on Penn State’s women's volleyball team, and Tyler Warren, a tight end for the Nittany Lions, were named the 2025 Ernest B. McCoy Memorial Award winners—an honor given annually to a senior athlete who excels in both sports and academics.  Penn State
