COMMUNITY NEWS

  • First Friday returns to downtown State College on April 3. The community event organized by the Downtown State College Improvement District will offer art receptions, shopping specials, live music and food deals at various local venues.  StateCollege.com
  • On Tuesday, County Commissioners honored Centre County PAWS for rescuing 43 dogs (including three litters) from a local home and approved a $1,000 donation to cover medical and emergency costs; community donations have added thousands more to support the shelter.  StateCollege.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four graduate students won awards at the Penn State Three Minute Thesis Competition on March 28 at the Nittany Lion Inn on the University Park campus. First place winner Julia Ho will advance to a regional contest among top students (highlighting innovations in research).  Penn State
  • The Penn State Board of Trustees announced that tuition will drop by $388 for in-state and $438 for out-of-state students beginning July 1 at University Park & commonwealth campuses. The decision follows underperforming athletic results and aims to ease costs for students.  Onward State
  • Penn State’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences mourns the loss of John Dutton, a longtime meteorology professor and dean emeritus who died Feb. 13 at age 89. The college will host a symposium + luncheon and an event on May 2 + at the Nittany Lion Inn on campus.  Penn State
  • Candidates for the University Park Undergraduate Association debated on Monday, Mar. 30 at the HUB-Robeson Center – they shared plans to boost connectivity and access to food, housing and mental health services while aiming to enhance the overall student experience.   • Professor Robert Roth of UW-Madison will deliver a mapping talk at noon Friday, Apr. 10 in 401 Steidle Building at Penn State, discussing collaborative mapping workshops & community engagement strategies. SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State Football spring ball has focused on teaching and communication since practice started at Holuba Hall. Head coach Matt Campbell and defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn (former NFL coach) have stressed clear instructions and drills to build team alignment for success in upcoming games.  Onward State
  • State College boys lacrosse beat Cedar Cliff 21 to 0 on Tuesday, with Trey Combs and Charlie Ladrido leading the win (combing for eight goals and five assists) as the team also excelled in faceoffs.  PennLive
  • Penn State men's volleyball moved up two spots to No. 15 in the AVCA polls after winning three key matches against No. 16 Ohio State & No. 19 NJIT. The Nittany Lions will play a two-game series in Charleston, West Virginia, starting Friday, April 3.  Onward State
  • After Penn State’s fourth spring practice, head coach Matt Campbell met Tuesday in the Lasch Building to outline his approach of building relationships with recruits plus noted that transfer Connor Barry is emerging as a surprise in the quarterback room while starters recover.  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State’s recruiting class gained a boost when three-star cornerback Zachary Gleason Jr. committed on Tuesday; he attends Central Catholic in Pittsburgh—an early pick that strengthens the Nittany Lions roster.  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State men’s hockey alternate captain Aiden Fink signed an amateur tryout agreement with the Nashville Predators and is expected to join the Milwaukee Admirals for the rest of the season, keeping his entry-level contract option for next season & allowing the possibility to return to Happy Valley.  Onward State
