EDUCATION NEWS

  • State College Area schools will add five minutes to each school day beginning Monday, Mar. 30 to make up for recent snow closures and ensure the school year ends with a half day on Friday, June 5 — Superintendent Curtis Johnson said the change avoids moving summer plans.  StateCollege.com
  • Four Penn State students were named as winners of the 2026 John W. Oswald Award for leadership today. The award recognized achievements in speech and mass media, creative and performing arts, scholarship, and social services on campus.  Penn State
  • Penn State College of Arts and Architecture will host acclaimed alumna and conductor Fernanda Lastra as its commencement speaker on Saturday, May 9 at Eisenhower Auditorium. She will also participate in a public conversation on Friday, May 8 at the Stuckeman Family Building Jury Space.  Penn State
  • Penn State will honor high-achieving undergraduate students with awards for academic excellence, leadership, and service at a ceremony on Saturday, March 28 at Eisenhower Auditorium (University Park) beginning at 3 p.m. The event is livestreamed since it is not open to the public.  Penn State
  • Penn State senior Noa Diggs has received the Jackson Lethbridge Tolerance Award for her leadership in promoting diversity and inclusion. The award recognizes her work with community programs, including Soft Space, which supports Black women on campus.  Penn State
  • Nine young Penn State alumni received the Alumni Achievement Award on March 20 at the Penn Stater Hotel + Conference Center in a ceremony that celebrated their professional achievements and ongoing connection with the university. The event honored graduates aged 35 and under for their leadership in fields such as engineering, nursing, and communications.  Penn State
  • Senior Joshua Mathew has received the 2026 Ardeth and Norman Frisbey International Student Award for mentoring international students and supporting cultural events on campus. He is a Global Lion Mentor and residential assistant (a sign of his commitment to community).  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State’s men’s lacrosse team surged with a win over Maryland in their Big Ten opener today at home and now prepares to face Ohio State — coach Jeff Tambroni said the team will focus on precision and energy during this tough stretch.  Onward State
  • Penn State guard Kiyomi McMiller (who had a record-breaking season in Happy Valley) announced on March 25 that she entered the transfer portal following a coaching change, and she will join a new team this season—marking her third transfer in as many seasons.  Daily Collegian
  • Levi Haines and Tessa Janecke have been named recipients of the Ernest B. McCoy Memorial Award for their athletic success & academic excellence; Haines earned two NCAA wrestling titles while Janecke won Olympic gold and became a first-time All-American in ice hockey.  Penn State
  • The NCAA Wrestling Championships saw Penn State clinch its team title on Saturday morning as the Nittany Lions set a record with 181.5 points in the tournament held at Rocket Arena. Oklahoma State placed second while Ohio State fell to fifth and Stanford finished sixth.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State women’s hockey achieved their first Frozen Four appearance last Friday at Pegula Ice Arena, falling in overtime. Coach Jeff Kampersal said the team will build on the effort and pursue future trophies (a milestone for the program).  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State wrestling's 13 titles in 15 seasons + a record-winning streak spark local pride as the program is compared with other historic collegiate dynasties across sports. The analysis fuels a debate on which run remains the greatest in college sports history.  Onward State
