  • Peter Haglich turned 102 on Monday, March 9 at Juniper Village at Brookline in State College, where friends gathered to celebrate his milestone birthday. The former naval officer (born on the Croatian island of Lošinj) said his secret was to start each day happy.  StateCollege.com

  • Tony Trischka will bring his Earl Jam banjo tribute to the State Theatre Saturday (one day after his second album releases Friday), featuring rare Earl Scruggs recordings in a show that blends tradition with innovation.  StateCollege.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Wangda Zuo, a Penn State engineering professor, was recognized by Energy and Buildings for his team's paper on a physics-informed AI framework that predicts urban building energy use — a method designed to assist local policymakers in planning efficient retrofits.  Penn State
  • Penn State’s Veterans Business Outreach Center is partnering with state correctional institutions to offer entrepreneurial education for incarcerated veterans. The center plans to expand support and resources at facilities including SCI Houtzdale and SCI Phoenix.  Penn State
  • Penn State University Libraries will hold an open house on March 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at its Cato Park Library Annex II for community members to learn about its new off-campus library pickup service and 24-hour book return bin.  Penn State

  • Today, Penn State President Neeli Bendapudi testifies before the Pennsylvania House Appropriations Committee in Harrisburg as she seeks a $49M funding boost+that would freeze in-state tuition for all undergraduates in 2027-28. The request aims to support affordable education through performance-based funding.  Penn State

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Penn State team has developed a new biomaterial foam (aerogel) that helps tissues heal by allowing cells and blood vessels to grow easily, and they are testing it in labs and on mice. The researchers hope it leads to better treatments soon.  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State wrestling’s PJ Duke captured the Big Ten title and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler as a true freshman. He will be the No. 1 seed at the upcoming NCAA Championships at Rocket Arena in Cleveland starting March 19.  Onward State
  • Northwestern defeated Penn State 76-66 at the United Center in Chicago after 17 turnovers allowed the Wildcats to gain 24 extra points, and coach Mike Rhoades said his team must reduce mistakes before its next Big Ten challenge.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State women's lacrosse players Delaney Radin and Rocquette Allen received Big Ten honors on March 10. Radin tied a school record with eight assists against Colgate and Allen recorded four points per game to earn a third consecutive Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor.  Daily Collegian
  • After the Big Ten championship, Penn State track teams finished strong with the women's squad moving to No. 25 and the men's team holding at No. 7; both squads are preparing for the NCAA championships on Friday and Saturday (NCAA).  Daily Collegian
