COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tickets for the Maple Harvest Festival at Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center go on sale online at noon today, Feb. 25. The festival will run March 21 and 22, featuring maple sugaring demos, live music, wildlife programs, and pancakes (in honor of the center’s 50th anniversary).  Onward State

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State researchers developed a bio-hybrid memory resistor that uses synthetic DNA with crystalline perovskite to cut power use by 90% and boost storage capacity. They plan to refine their design and test other bio-inspired applications soon.  Penn State
  • Alivia Peterson, a first-generation fourth-year student majoring in psychology with minors in kinesiology and sports studies, prepares for a career as a counseling psychologist for athletes and families. She is building experience — through peer advising, research, and work with Hummingbird ABA Therapy.  Penn State
  • The Penn State Water Conference has announced a call for abstracts and registration for its two-day interdisciplinary event at the Nittany Lion Inn from March 26-27, with submissions and registrations due by Feb. 27. Participants from diverse fields can share research on water challenges and innovative solutions.  Penn State
  • Teaching and Learning with Technology at Penn State University Libraries will host its virtual Symposium Lite event on Thursday, March 26 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The half-day session will feature faculty talks on digital accessibility, generative AI and innovative tech teaching, with registration now open.  Penn State
  • Thomas O'Malley, a first-generation adult learner, returned to school via Penn State World Campus after a long retail career and is pursuing dual bachelor's degrees. He will soon advance to graduate school after earning 63 credits, a scholarship, and a promising job call from Chewy.  Penn State
  • The Penn State Board of Trustees ballot for spring election includes four candidates—Joseph Derenzo, Karen Keller, Ali Krieger, and Jay Paterno—approved by the Nominating Subcommittee after meeting nomination requirements. Ballots will be mailed on April 20, with returns due by May 7 and results on May 8.  StateCollege.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Three active Penn State student-athletes and two alumni competed at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympic Games; Tessa Janecke earned a gold medal in women’s ice hockey while other teammates, including one returning Olympian (Jessica Adolfsson), finished behind the leaders in hockey and skeleton events.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State women's lacrosse attacker Rocquette Allen became the program's first to win a Big Ten Freshman of the Week award Tuesday after scoring three goals + four assists for wins over Pitt and Drexel. The Nittany Lions will face Cornell on Saturday at 3 p.m.  Onward State
  • Penn State Women’s Hockey earned its highest program ranking at No. 3 in the latest USCHO poll after splitting its final series against RIT. The team will compete in its first semifinals game against Syracuse at Pegula Ice Arena on Feb. 27 at 6 p.m.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State women’s basketball will host USC at 6 p.m. today at their home court as they seek a win to boost postseason hopes. USC is coming off a six game winning streak and will play without JuJu Watkins (torn ACL).  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State men's volleyball star Owen Rose was named EIVA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after recording 14 blocks over two matches against Harvard. The middle blocker averages 2.57 blocks per set and will face Merrimack Friday at Rec Hall (7 p.m.).  Onward State
  • Penn State wrestlers remain No. 1 nationally after securing their 86th dual win with a 50-0 victory over Princeton. The team will host the Big Ten Championships (Mar. 7-8) at the Bryce Jordan Center.  Onward State
  • Former Penn State quarterback Drew Allar will throw at the NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis later this week, after recovering from surgery for his broken ankle on Oct. 15.  Onward State
