BUSINESS NEWS

  • Chase Bank opened its first local branch at 1300 N. Atherton St. in Northland Center and will host a ribbon cutting event at 10 a.m. Thursday with Mayor Ezra Nanes and local business representatives in attendance. The branch offers modern banking services with eight employees and digital self-service features.  StateCollege.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Happy Valley Comic and Collectibles Convention will take place at the Nittany Valley Sports Centre on Saturday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, Mar. 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. offering trading card tournaments, costume contests, guest appearances, and free shuttle service from East Halls starting at 9:30 a.m.  Onward State
  • The Penn State School of Music will present the 2026 African American Music Festival, 'Sisters in Song: Revolutionary Works of Black Women,' on Tuesday, March 3 to honor Black women composers with lectures, a masterclass, and two concerts in the Recital Hall; admission is free.  Penn State

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Registration is open for the 2026 First-Gen Student Support Summit on March 19 at University Park, featuring a keynote from Joshua Fredenburg and networking sessions, followed by a First-Gen Community Celebration on April 14 in Alumni Hall to honor graduating students (registration closes when full).  Penn State
  • Freshmen wrapped up their first THON Weekend at the Bryce Jordan Center after learning a line dance, joining a pep rally, and raising over $18.8 million for The Kids. Reflections from participants show pride and hard work as they celebrated this memorable community tradition.  Onward State
  • Two Penn State professors were elected to the National Academy of Engineering, joining 130 U.S. and 28 international peers in the class of 2026. Their recognition honors groundbreaking work in mining and electrical engineering at the university.  Penn State
  • James Sears, an assistant professor from Michigan State, will host a free (open to all) talk at noon on Wednesday, March 4 in 157 Hosler Building at Penn State on how utility price changes influence household water use. The event is part of a spring seminar series.  Penn State
  • Registration is now open for ASA DataFest 2026, a weekend-long data analysis competition for undergraduate and master’s students at Penn State. The event will be held March 20 to 22 at University Park and is free for the first 150 participants.  Penn State
  • Alum Nina Royer danced in THON 2026 this past weekend after four years behind the scenes + partnered with best friend Gianna Giorghianni through the Dance Marathon Alumni Interest Group. Royer, who graduated last spring, said the event marked a full circle moment in her dedication to THON.  Onward State
  • Ann Erlich, a Schreyer Scholar and geography major at Penn State, crafted a unique dual degree program while balancing international study, a NASA internship and leadership roles as a peer educator and Storm Chase Team president. Her work shows strong support from the Schreyer community in expanding academic opportunities.  Penn State

FINANCE NEWS

  • Today, Penn State launched a new financial shared services model that brings nearly 500 finance employees together to process transaction requests via a new web portal and a 90-day (hypercare) period will guide campus staff through the transition.  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • After an 11-4 win over the Buckeyes, Penn State hockey rose to No. 5 and secured home ice for Big Ten Quarterfinals as Gavin McKenna set a record of one goal and seven assists. The team faces Notre Dame at 7:05 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27 at Compton Family Ice Arena.  Onward State
