COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Starting Monday, Feb. 16, a construction crawl invites kids to explore downtown and pick up a free hard hat, collecting stickers at local businesses to earn an activity book (parents can win a $150 gift card).   • Nittany Valley Sports Centre in Patton Township will host the grand opening of The Clubhouse Family Fun Centre on March 7 at noon; the new space offers 70 arcade games & VR adventures for family outings and events.  StateCollege.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Downtown State College’s Gift Card program now features a buy-one-get-one offer starting Saturday, Feb. 14. Customers who buy a $100 digital gift card will receive a free $25 card and those who buy a $200 card will receive a free $60 card (supplies are limited).  Downtown State College

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State researchers led by Associate Professor Xingjie Ni developed a prototype that uses light—forming an infinity mirror loop—to speed up AI tasks and lower energy use. The team will work to shrink the device so companies can later use it with current computing platforms.  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • Josh Reed has played forward and center, scoring double figures in his last eight games as Penn State (Happy Valley) manages injuries. Coach Mike Rhoades said Reed’s versatility may help the team create mismatches in Big Ten play.  Daily Collegian
  • Before the season began, Penn State softball went on a team retreat to Philadelphia to build unity using a Rocky mindset and secured a 4-1 win in their opening weekend. Coach Crowell said the team's togetherness, inspired by shared moments (including buying Rocky memorabilia), fuels their drive for wins.  Daily Collegian
  • Nine Penn State football players were invited to join the NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis from Feb. 23 to March 2, plus their televised workouts will air from Feb. 26 to March 1.  Onward State
  • Penn State men’s lacrosse players Hunter Aquino and Alex Ross were added to the Tewaaraton Award watch list on Tuesday. The Nittany Lions will play Princeton at noon Saturday, Feb. 14, in a matchup that builds on a strong season start.  Onward State
  • Coach Guy Gadowsky confirmed that Gavin McKenna will play for Penn State this weekend against Michigan even though his recent legal matter linked to an incident at Doggie’s Pub is still underway, with his court date moved to March 11.  Daily Collegian
  • The Penn State women’s lacrosse team beat UMass 17-9 inside Holuba Hall on Wednesday afternoon. Stellar plays from both new starters (and veterans) built an early lead, and they will face Bucknell at 11 a.m. on Sunday.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State baseball (coming off a strong season) opens its season tomorrow at the MLB Desert Invitational in Scottsdale, Arizona (playing against Air Force in a three-game weekend). Gambino’s team, strengthened by transfers and a top recruiting class, will build on past success as it competes in a challenging schedule.  Onward State
  • Penn State wrestlers will face Ohio State at Bryce Jordan Center on Friday at 7 p.m. as both undefeated teams prepare for a highly anticipated showdown — a test of their strength — that could extend the Nittany Lions’ record streak.  Onward State
