COMMUNITY NEWS

  • South Hills School of Business and Technology hosted its annual Gimme Shelter benefit concert on Feb. 5 in State College to raise awareness and funds for housing security (6-9 p.m.). Mayor Ezra Nanes and local agencies backed the event to support efforts addressing visible and hidden homelessness.  Daily Collegian

  • Professor David Huff used decades of turfgrass research and Penn State resources + local entrepreneurial support to launch PennPoa, a startup that transforms golf course turfgrass with advanced annual bluegrass seed varieties. His company began sales in 2025 and already has orders for 2026 and 2027.  Penn State

CULTURE NEWS

  • Penn State and local venues will host cultural events from Feb. 5 to Feb. 12, featuring a jazz concert at Eisenhower Auditorium, Treaty Oak Revival at Bryce Jordan Center, and an acrobatic performance by Cirque Kalabanté on University Park campus (plus lectures and workshops for National Black History Month).  Penn State

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Faculty and staff at the College of Agricultural Sciences were honored for 25 years of service at a celebration held on Feb. 6 in University Park. Dean Troy Ott presented each of the 26 honorees with a special gift to mark their dedication.  Penn State
  • Noel Habashy, a Penn State associate teaching professor, received the 2025 USDA Excellence in College and University Teaching Award—this regional honor includes a stipend of 2000 dollars to boost his work in international agriculture and student engagement.  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • State College’s top swimmer Molly Workman broke her 50 free meet record for the fourth consecutive year at the Mid Penn swim championships on Friday and won gold with a 22.17 finish — adding to a relay record. The senior now looks forward to competing in the remaining races.  PennLive
  • Penn State softball won its season opener 7-4 in extra innings in Clearwater, Florida on Friday morning during a doubleheader against Missouri; the team showed strong pitching and timely hits.  Daily Collegian
  • With key big men sidelined, Penn State coach Mike Rhoades said freshman 7-footer Justin Houser played 21 minutes in a recent loss to Michigan. He is working with coach Brent Scott to boost his game + he could see increased minutes in the upcoming USC game if injuries ease.  Daily Collegian
  • In Clearwater, the Nittany Lions continue their season at the NFCA Leadoff Classic today with a doubleheader starting at noon, facing Eastern Kentucky + BYU at 3 p.m. The team is set to add momentum after last Friday's season opener.  Daily Collegian
  • After winning 18-14 over Colgate last weekend, the Nittany Lions will return indoors today to face Villanova in their season-opening lacrosse game at Holuba Hall & aim to extend their winning run.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State Athletics released its annual financial report this week, showing a 15% revenue increase for the 2024-25 season that included national championships and strong football ticket sales. The report details income from contributions, media rights, and ticket sales as well as expenses for coaching and stadium renovations.  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State women's lacrosse will kick off its 17-game season under first-year coach Kayla Treanor on Saturday against Richmond. Staff forecasts range from strong opening win streaks to tough losses — key matchups include Princeton on March 15 and Northwestern in April.  Daily Collegian
