  • The local YMCA held a surprise gathering Friday to honor longtime swimmer Maynard Kohler, who turns 100 today after 22 years of daily workouts on West Whitehall Road. The celebration follows a previous 98th birthday tribute and shows his lasting impact on the community.  StateCollege.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Erin Mallea, an assistant professor at Penn State’s School of Visual Arts, will use an art-science residency at PLAYA in Oregon in July to develop Issue 7 of Tree News - a project linking art and environmental themes. Her work underlines ongoing creative research at the university.  Penn State

  • Penn State Extension is offering a free six-week webinar series on beekeeping from noon to 1 p.m. Thursdays from Feb. 12 to March 19. Sessions will explore practices in Italy, Israel, Zimbabwe, Korea, New Zealand and Northern Quebec (participants must register by 11:59 a.m. each date).  Penn State
  • Penn State School of Visual Arts students display multimedia work inspired by their Japan trip at the Borland Project Space until Jan. 30.   • On Friday night, Penn State wrestling shut out Indiana 48 to 0 at Rec Hall, extending its dual meet win streak to 81 + the team faces Maryland at 5 p.m. today.  StateCollege.com
  • Coach Jeff Kampersal reached 500 career wins today with a 5—0 victory over Delaware at Pegula Ice Arena and became one of only five Division-I women’s hockey coaches to mark this milestone.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State Athletics will open Beaver Stadium’s rink for four public ice skating sessions next week. Sessions run on Jan. 28 (12:30-1:20 p.m.), Jan. 30 (7:45-8:45 p.m.), Jan. 31 (8:15-9:15 p.m.) and Feb. 1 (5:45-6:45 p.m.), and participants must pre-register with a $30 fee that includes skate rentals.  Onward State
  • Beaver Stadium installs a hockey rink for four public ice skating sessions next week on Jan. 28 at 12:30, Jan. 30 at 7:45, Jan. 31 at 8:15 and Feb. 1 at 5:45 p.m.—registration is required. The venue will also host Penn State hockey games during Winter Sports Weekend.  StateCollege.com
  • Penn State hockey rallied on Friday at the Kohl Center to post a 7-2 comeback win over Wisconsin after early penalties; McKenna's hat trick plus Fleming's 39 saves helped extend the team's winning streak to six games.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State wrestling will host Indiana for a Friday night dual meet at 7 p.m. in Rec Hall — the contest follows a recent Midwest trip and precedes a Jan. 30 duel at Bryce Jordan Center against Nebraska.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State infielder Bryce Molinaro (a Drums native and former St. John's player) was named to Perfect Game's All-Big Ten Preseason team after posting 60 hits, 13 home runs, and 61 RBIs last season; the award was announced Friday, Jan. 23.  Daily Collegian
  • The 1-0 Podcast co-hosts Avery Hill, Lyle Alenstein and Will Horstman discussed Penn State football after the 2025 season as they compared head coach Matt Campbell’s potential with Indiana’s past success and spotlighted five-star recruit Kemon Spell while previewing a 2027 schedule addition.  Daily Collegian
  • Three-star running back Amar'e Glover from Middletown, Delaware, committed as a preferred walk-on with Penn State after visiting campus frequently.
