EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences awarded bridge funding to four faculty to support global research on soil fertility, public health, climate resilience and trade. Projects will run up to 24 months with partners in Belize, Tanzania, Mexico and India and include tick biodiversity studies by Professors Machtinger and Skvarla.  Penn State
  • Barron Owusu, a fourth-year Liberal Arts student and NAACP chapter president at Penn State, has led efforts to boost equity and organized events such as the 2025 Block Party. He draws on personal experience and strong academic mentorship to drive change on campus.  Penn State
  • A Penn State-led study (which included researchers from the College of Agricultural Sciences) finds that domestication changes squash flowers’ scent chemicals to attract bees. The research shows wild squash emit stronger signals while domesticated varieties rely on 1,4-dimethoxybenzene (a compound that continues to lure bees) and may guide future crop breeding and pollination efforts.  Penn State
  • Penn State’s Sustainable Food Systems Network will host a Food Justice Summit on Thursday, Feb. 12 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Heritage Hall (HUB-Robeson Center) to explore food access, equity and action. Students, faculty and community partners will join for a keynote, panel and workshop to address food justice.  Penn State
  • Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences has joined the FAO to mark 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer by highlighting women's roles through events such as the Pasa Sustainable Agriculture conference (this month), an international summit in Washington, D.C. in June, and Ag Progress Days in August.  Penn State

HEALTH NEWS

  • Penn State Health reproductive specialists are updating fertility care by offering IUI and IVF for couples with infertility and recommending longer-lasting contraceptives that allow a quick return to fertility. They are also planning to launch an ovarian tissue cryopreservation program in late 2026 to help patients facing treatments like chemotherapy.  Penn State
  • University Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services and the Jana Marie Foundation hosted the Stomp Out Stigma event yesterday at Hub-Robeson Center where participants painted shoes to create a living art installation that sparks mental health conversation. The final piece will be displayed at the Student Health Center (a lasting symbol of community support).  Daily Collegian
  • Researchers at Penn State’s Criminal Justice Research Center reported that up to 30% of Pennsylvania adults gambled online in 2025, up from 20% the previous year, while state regulators recorded over $3 billion in iGaming revenues. The Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs will launch expanded case management services to help those with problem gambling.  Penn State

  • Penn State freshman wrestler PJ Duke competed today at Carver-Hawkeye Arena against No. 12 Jordan Williams in a 157-pound match, securing his only takedown by patiently capitalizing on a defensive stance. He remains undefeated as he works to climb the rankings with strong team support.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State football will host Maine (FCS) on September 11 at Beaver Stadium in its 2027 non-conference schedule after Delaware was replaced. The move continues the team’s trend of inviting FCS opponents for a softer gridiron challenge.  Onward State
  • Penn State men's volleyball rescheduled its second match against McKendree from 4 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in Lebanon (Illinois), while the first match remains at 6 p.m. Friday.  Onward State
  • Penn State wrestlers Rocco Welsh and Cole Mirasola earned Big Ten weekly honors on January 22 after winning upset matches against Iowa. Welsh improved his ranking with a 2-1 win over No. 1 Angelo Ferrari while Mirasola upset No. 5 Ben Kueter to move up.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State Wrestling's dual with Maryland is moved from noon Sunday to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24 because heavy snow is expected in College Park. The change helps ensure safe travel for the team ahead of its back-to-back duals.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State is ranked second in the Big Ten Men’s Lacrosse Preseason Poll — three players including Hunter Aquino, Alex Ross and Jon King are on the watch list as the team looks ahead to a competitive season.  Daily Collegian
