COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Penn State campuses will host a series of events honoring Martin Luther King Jr. following today, including a banquet on Jan. 15 in University Park, a day of service on Jan. 19, and a peace march with a panel discussion on Jan. 20 (the Undaunted Hope theme guides the celebrations).  Penn State

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Hideaway Electric Speakeasy at 127 E. Calder Way closed permanently on Jan. 11 after a ten‑month run marked by financial strain and allegations, the owner said — the downtown venue had tried to reboot its operations following a brief winter closure.  StateCollege.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • A public mural project called Looking at US will feature 10-12 murals from the Palmer Museum on downtown buildings. The project will have a ribbon-cutting in June and is supported by DSCID, 3 Dots Downtown + Knight Foundation Fund at Centre Foundation.  StateCollege.com
  • The Penn State All-Sports Museum now features The Way I Saw It: A Photography Retrospective (a new exhibit celebrating alumnus Pat Little's 100 curated images from 1977 to 2005) and will be open through Aug. 1.  Penn State

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Penn State will relocate its forest technology and wildlife technology associate degree programs to Altoona to keep them running. New forest technology students will start the transition in fall 2026, and fully relocate by fall 2027, while enrolled students complete their studies at their current campuses until closure.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State alum Rosemary Katchmar has committed $200,000 in her estate to expand the Fostering Lions Program at University Park. The gift will provide tailored funding and monthly seminars to support students from foster care, homelessness, or as emancipated minors.  Penn State
  • The Penn State Center for Arts and Crafts is accepting Spring 2026 art class registrations. Session 1 classes begin Jan. 26 and Session 2 starts Mar. 16 with in-person sign-ups available at 3 Ritenour Building (students, faculty, and staff with a valid PSU ID).  Penn State
  • Mary Ward, a Penn State alumna, has established the Ward-Igwé Family Matching Scholarship in the College of IST with a $12,500 donation matched by Capital One and the Igwé Family Matching Scholarship Program, bringing the endowment to $50,000. The scholarship supports Pennsylvania students facing financial challenges.  Penn State

  • Residents told borough council Monday they worry redevelopment plans for Addison Court, an affordable housing building for older residents, could displace tenants and limit access for disabled individuals. Council members said they are considering alternatives such as new housing sites (Bellaire Court and other downtown options) to protect these residents.  Daily Collegian

HEALTH NEWS

  • Penn State researchers have updated guidance on the Female Athlete Triad for athletic girls and women by introducing a new adolescent model and revised energy deficiency criteria – the first update since 2014 – to enhance screening, diagnosis, and treatment.  Penn State

SPORTS NEWS

  • Penn State field hockey announced Tuesday, Jan. 13 that it hired Hannah Prince as its new head coach. Prince led St. Joseph's to four NCAA Tournaments including a 2024 National Championship game appearance + she will work to restore the program’s national relevance.  Onward State
  • Andrew Deal, AJ Piazza and Evan Smith recapped Penn State wrestling’s dynamic month and previewed the dual against Iowa on Friday+ their discussion highlighted key match-ups for the Nittany Lions.  Daily Collegian
  • Penn State men's soccer added centerback Arian Recinos from the University of New Hampshire after he earned 27 starts in two seasons. The Connecticut native, who played for the Guatemalan U-20 National Team and New York Red Bulls II, brings valuable experience to the Blue and White.  Daily Collegian
